A secure future:stable energy

Pidula Wakepark produces most of its own electricity. The solar park and the battery bank keep the cables, the kitchen and the houses running even when there's no power from the grid.

Why it matters

Fun, tourism and sustainability in one place

Pidula Wakepark is Saaremaa's leading water park. The more guests and services there are, the more important it is that electricity is always there.

  • Pro and Beginner wake cables
  • A sandy beach and an inflatable funpark
  • Trampolines and a pizza café
  • A cocktail bar and the Sunset Terrace upstairs
  • The Funpark café for families and groups
  • The Green Key label and a sustainable image

Our energy situation

The goal: greater independence and efficiency

Bought from the grid4000–9000 kWhof electricity we currently buy each month
February–November0 kWhof outside electricity needed during this time
Switchover0.2 secondsautomatic and uninterrupted

Independent of the grid

Up to 3 days without the grid

  • In July, solar production covers most of our consumption
  • A small amount still comes from the grid, but the surplus also goes back into it
  • The batteries smooth out daily fluctuations and keep the supply secure
  • In a complete outage, we can run at peak load for up to 3 days
  • If the sun shines at all, we can keep going almost indefinitely

One day: 19 July

The day's energy flow

  1. Late morning

    The sun climbs

Solar production rises sharply from late morning to the afternoon.

  2. Midday

    Batteries full

By midday the batteries are fully charged and power the park until the evening. Consumption is covered mainly by the sun and the battery, and the surplus goes to the grid at peak hours.

  3. Night

    The battery takes over

At night the system switches to battery power without interruption.

Security of supply and the market

An investment that pays off

  • As well as selling renewable energy, we also take part in the grid stability market
  • The battery investment pays for itself in about 1.5 years
  • The solar park has already paid for itself
  • Buying the batteries has twice been supported by the security-of-supply grant of EIS (the Estonian Business and Innovation Agency)
22,19 tCO₂ saved
369,83equivalent to trees planted
11,26 tcoal saved
6,96 twaste recycled

The future

Energy independence is the basis for growth

Renewable energy lets us offer new services and stretch the tourist season beyond the summer. It also strengthens Saaremaa's role in the “Green Destination” network.
