Green Key – General Objectives of Sustainable Development
Pidula Wakepark is an environmentally friendly water sports and leisure center for the whole family, located on Saaremaa island.
The general goals of Pidula Wakepark follow the company’s responsibility towards the environment as well as society, culture, economy, and quality.
The company is committed to achieving the following goals:
1. Environmental Protection
Pidula Wakepark focuses on conserving and protecting the environment. It is essential to ensure that all activities within the park’s territory do not harm the environment.
Preserve and protect local biodiversity.
Reduce the carbon footprint.
Apply circular economy principles.
Limit the consumption of resources (heating and electricity, water, etc.).
Limit the use of environmentally harmful substances, including chemical-based cleaning products, air pollutants, fertilizers, and pesticides.
Monitor and regulate the use of environmentally harmful substances.
1.1 Examples:
Noise, vibration, and air pollution should be avoided, and Wakepark activities must not disturb the habitats of local flora and fauna. The Odalätsi Springs are located in the immediate vicinity of the Wakepark. Additionally, the surrounding area is home to many protected species of plants and animals, and a large part of Wakepark lies within Natura 2000 areas.
Sound levels should be kept as low as possible during regular park hours, and pyrotechnics should be avoided during evening events.
Pidula Wakepark aims to implement various circular economy principles in its daily operations and business development:
Waste reuse: Find new functions for usable waste.
(e.g., worn-out towels used as cleaning rags, cardboard boxes saved and used for sorting or transporting waste).Repair and restoration: Broken items should be repaired or restored to extend their life and reduce the need for new ones.
Product reuse: Existing items can be used instead of buying new ones. For example, old wakeboards can be repurposed as chairs.
Recycling: Used materials and products are preferred over new purchases.
Resource-saving measures at Pidula Wakepark:
Water conservation: Reduce water usage with water-saving technologies, such as low-flow faucets and showers. Ensure all pipes and fixtures are in good condition and functioning properly.
Electricity conservation: Reduce electricity use by employing energy-saving light bulbs, minimizing standby power use, and ensuring lights are not left on unnecessarily.
Paper conservation: Save paper by printing double-sided. Pidula Wakepark prefers to use digital documents.
Efficient transport: Transport costs and emissions can be reduced by using public transport or carpooling with colleagues.
2. Sustainability
Wakepark should follow the principles of sustainable development to minimize environmental damage. This includes conserving resources and using renewable energy. In addition to the solar energy already used at the park, installing wind turbines could help meet nighttime energy needs and power the park’s own electrical system.
Water should also be treated with as few chemicals as possible.
3. Environmental Awareness
Wakepark encourages its visitors to be more environmentally conscious. The park provides opportunities for waste sorting and recycling, and could also organize environmental education programs and events to raise awareness about environmental protection.
In 2023, Pidula Wakepark is participating in the Saaremaa Green Destination pilot working group.
Additionally, Pidula Wakepark is organizing 4 children’s camps that include waste sorting workshops.
4. Social, Cultural, and Economic Responsibility
The Wakepark must involve other organizations and communities in its environmental efforts to help protect the natural values and wildlife of Saaremaa.
Ensure equal treatment and opportunities for all employees.
Prohibit child labor.
Provide a safe and secure working environment.
Support equal rights and treatment for all people.
Ensure non-discriminatory hiring, including for leadership positions.
Promote training, information, and awareness.
Support the local community.
Support the company’s contribution to sustainable tourism planning and management at the local level.
The park could also organize joint projects with local businesses to reduce its environmental impact.
